MAILMAN SCHOOL FACULTY RECOGNIZED FOR WORK WITH
CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS


John Santelli, MD, MPH
The National Assembly on School-Based Health Care (NASBHC) honored John Santelli, MD, MPH, professor of clinical Population and Family Health and chair of the Mailman School 's Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health as one of eight "Volunteers of the Decade." Cited for his dedication and successful approach to delivering healthcare for children and adolescents, Dr. Santelli received the award in conjunction with the advocacy organization's 10th anniversary celebration held in June in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Santelli was a founding member of NASBHC, its first treasurer, and a member of the Evaluation and Quality Task Force.

A national leader in insuring that adolescents are appropriately included in health research, Dr. Santelli has conducted studies on HIV/ STD risk behaviors, programs to prevent STD /HIV/unintended pregnancy among adolescents and women, school-based health centers, clinical preventive services, and research ethics. Prior to joining the Mailman School faculty, he was the Chief of the Applied Sciences Branch in the Division of Reproductive Health at U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The National Assembly on School-Based Health Care is an advocacy organization that promotes policies, programs and funding to integrate school-based health care into the nation's health care and education systems.

Alwyn Cohall, MD
Alwyn Cohall, MD, a ssociate professor of clinical Sociomedical Sciences and clinical Population and Family Health, has been selected to receive the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Adolescent Health's Founders Award for Community Leadership Award.

A key resource and leader in adolescent healthcare, Dr. Cohall was cited for his work in the community to improve healthcare for all adolescents. For example, as director of Project STAY (Services to Assist Youth), a New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute funded program, he has developed a special focus on the clinical management of high-risk and HIV (+) youth. Additionally, as director of the Mailman School's Harlem Health Promotion Center, one of 33 national Prevention Research Centers established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Cohall's main areas of research interest include adolescent health; reproductive health; access to healthcare, and health communication/health promotion. Dr. Cohall will receive his award at AAP's 2005 national conference in Washington, D.C. this fall.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is an organization of 60,000 pediatricians and pediatric specialists dedicated to the health, safety and well-being of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
