Two SMS Doctoral Students Receive CDC and NIH Fellowships

Two students in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences have received fellowships to fund their doctoral dissertation research. Marcie Rubin, who received a grant for public health research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will examine the production of disparities in mortality in the U.S., over time, from HIV/AIDS and lung cancer.

Ms. Rubin plans to test a fundamental theory that holds that as the capacity to control disease and prevent death increases, the expanded capacity combines with existing social and economic inequalities to create health disparities by race and socioeconomic status.

Jonathan Garcia has received a National Institutes of Health Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award, which is given to promote diversity in health-related research.

Mr. Garcia's research will evaluate the role of Afro-Brazilian religious groups in making HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services accessible to poor and marginalized communities, as well as the factors that determine the level of involvement.
