Alumnae Christa Myers and Shannon Farley Introduce An Interactive Data Tool to Mailman Community On March 26, Christa Myers, MPH '06 and Shannon Farley, MPH '04, both members of the Community Epidemiology Unit at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, came to the School to discuss EpiQuery, an interactive health data system available to the public through the Health Department website. "EpiQuery empowers individuals and communities to improve the health of the City by providing current health information on residents throughout the five boroughs," said Ms. Myers. "This tool is also essential for students and faculty interested in using data to inform public health practice and to expand the knowledge base." "EpiQuery is particularly useful for health researchers," said Ms. Farley. "The system is designed to allow users to answer their own public health questions using several datasets, including adult and youth survey data and vital statistics mortality data." With simple mouse clicks, the system can generate point estimates and rates with confidence intervals, run cross-tabulations, and provide neighborhood- and borough-level statistics. EpiQuery and additional Health Department data resources and publications can be accessed at www.nyc.gov/health/mycommunityshealth. Should users require additional help, the Health Department offers assistance with study design and implementation, expert epidemiological input, and locating data not found on its website. Community Epi staff are also available to give presentations about the health data for interested groups. Email inquiries can be sent to query@health.nyc.gov. Prior to joining the Health Department as research analysts, Ms. Myers was at the Harlem Health Promotion Center, where she managed data for the Center's adolescent HIV program. Ms. Farley worked at Pfizer, where she helped develop informational and education products along with research on health disparities.
