Dean Allan Rosenfield Receives Frank A. Calderone Prize in Public Health and Four Other Prestigious Awards

Allan Rosenfield, MD received the Frank A. Calderone Prize in Public Health at a luncheon attended by more than 200 colleagues, alumni, friends, and family. Selected for his exceptional contributions and legacy of inspired leadership in the field of global health, Dr. Rosenfield joined a distinguished group of public health leaders who were given the prestigious prize in past years, including Dr. C. Everett Koop, the late Dr. Jonathan Mann, Dr. William Foege, Dr. D.A. Henderson, Dr. Nafis Sadik, Dr. Peter Piot and Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson.

Awarded every two years, the prize was established in 1986 through the generosity of Dr. Frank Calderone and his family, in recognition of Dr. Calderone’s distinguished career and life-long commitment to the health of the public. Daughter Francesca Calderone presented the award on behalf of the Calderone family and said, “no one is more deserving to receive this than Dr. Rosenfield. He has elevated the entire field of public health with his tireless work and commitment.”

Calderone Prize awardees are chosen by a selection committee of public health leaders. Dean James W. Curran of the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health attended this year’s presentation and luncheon in Dr. Rosenfield’s honor.

As is customary, the Calderone Award recipient presents a lecture on a public health topic of his or her choice. Dr. Rosenfield’s talk, “A Vision for Change: Taking a Stand for Women’s Health and Rights,” reflected on his career, considered how the public health field has responded to issues of women’s health and rights, and described the fundamental principles that have guided the development and implementation of programs at the Mailman School. The talk was delivered by Lynn Freedman, professor of clinical Population and Family Health and director of the Mailman School program, Averting Maternal Mortality and Death (AMDD).

“The Calderone Award is a wonderful recognition of Dr. Rosenfield’s contributions and leadership in the field of public health as well as his firm commitment to women’s health and reproductive rights worldwide,” commented Dean Curran. “Dr. Rosenfield prepared an inspiring lecture which certainly honored the award’s namesake, Dr. Frank Calderone, and his distinguished career and commitment to public health.”
