Sherry Glied Addresses Universal Healthcare Coverage in the New England Journal of Medicine
In a New England Journal of Medicine perspective, Sherry Glied, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, discusses the controversial issue of individual mandates for health insurance, an element of the Clinton and Obama health plans and of the recent health insurance reform in Massachusetts. The editorial, “Universal Coverage One Head at a Time — The Risks and Benefits of Individual Health Insurance Mandates,” is published in the April 10, 2008 issue of the Journal.

The Department of Biostatistics Establishes Third Data Coordinating Center
The Mailman School's Department of Biostatistics has launched the Biostatistics Center for Clinical Trials Management (BCCTM), the Department's third major data coordinating center dedicated to innovative statistical design and the analysis and management of data for clinical trials taking place around the Columbia University Medical Center and at sites around the University, country, and world.

Mailman School Center Recognized with “Implementing Partners’ Award” from President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in Lesotho
The International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) in Lesotho has been awarded the 2007 Implementing Partner’s Award by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The award recognizes ICAP for “outstanding program planning, monitoring and reporting” and is the first award of its type to be given to a PEPFAR implementing partner in Lesotho.

Public Health Week: Mailman School Participates in New ASPH “This is Public Health” Campaign
Fifty students from the Mailman School of Public Health, along with staff from the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and the communications firm SS+K, braved the chilly New York City weather at 5am on Monday, April 7, to be in the audience of the three national morning shows with the hope of getting on the air to voice their support for public health. Carrying signs with public health messages and wearing “This is Public Health” t-shirts, students could be seen on both the Today Show and Good Morning America. Some students met and had their picture taken with Today Show host Ms. Meredith Vieira (see photo).

Robert Ogden Named 2008 Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy Fellow
Nine new fellows have been appointed to the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy this year, joining the current group of 20 premier educators from Columbia University Medical Center’s (CUMC) medical, nursing, public health, and dental schools. The Mailman School if pleased to announce that Robert Ogden, PhD, associate professor of Biostatistics (in Psychiatry), has been named as a member of the 2008 class.

HPM Students Collaborate with CancerCare
In 2007, students in the Department of Health Policy and Management conducted a study in collaboration with CancerCare, a national nonprofit organization that provides free, professional support services for anyone affected by cancer, to study the issues and barriers to adherence to oral breast cancer therapy. The six tutorial students served as a consulting team to recommend methods that CancerCare can use to enhance their services to meet the needs of women faced with a long-term drug regimen.
