John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Awards $3.9 Million for National Research Network on an Aging Society John W. Rowe, MD, professor of Health Policy and Management, has received a $3.9 million grant from the MacArthur Foundation to move forward on his work with the National Research Network on an Aging Society. According to Dr. Rowe, "Simultaneous increases in active life expectancy and the aging of the baby boom generation are driving a major demographic transition in America. This fundamental change in the age structure of society has important implications that go far beyond the oft-cited fiscal threats to Medicare and Social Security and include stresses on many of our Society's key institutions, such as retirement, education, housing, the workforce, churches, local communities, political parties, and the family itself." To address these issues, the MacArthur Foundation established a National Research Network on an Aging Society in early 2007. Chaired by Dr. Rowe, the Network will conduct research and convene groups of thought leaders to assist in the development of policy recommendations and suggest strategies that will enable our society to profit from these changes. An interdisciplinary group of scholars drawn from relevant disciplines and based at Universities across the United States and Europe has been recruited to conduct research and develop recommendations related to these coming challenges and opportunities.
