Marian Jones Wins NYAM Student Essay Prize in the History of Medicine and Public Health

With an essay entitled, "The Contentious History of Homelessness and Mental Illness in New York City: An Analysis of Interviews," Sociomedical Sciences student Marian Jones garnered the 2007 New York Academy of Medicine Student Essay Prize in the History of Medicine and Public Health. Said Christian Warren, PhD, a member of NYAM's review committee, "Ms. Jones' essay was one of 20 submissions we received this year. There were 11 strong semi-finalists from programs around the country-from Tulane to Hopkins to Harvard. In the end, after a very close vote, we all agreed Ms. Jones' paper stood out above the rest."

As the winner, Ms. Jones received a $500 prize that was presented during a "History of Medicine Lecture" held at the Academy on December 12. Her essay will also be submitted to the Journal of Urban Health for expedited review and possible publication.

The Academy will be offering the prize again in 2008. For more details, please check their website early next year. The deadline will occur in March 2008.
