Young Men's Health Initiative Receives Grant from Ford Foundation

The Center for Community Health and Education (CCHE) at the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health received a two-year grant from the Ford Foundation to support the Young Men’s Health Initiative (YMHI). The YMHI is a component of the service, teaching, and research programs operated jointly by CCHE and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The YMHI aims to enhance, evaluate, and disseminate model practices of community, school, and clinic-based services for male sexual and reproductive health. Program activities include services for males 12-35 years old who live in the communities of Washington Heights, Harlem, and the Bronx. Services include the Young Men’s Clinic (YMC), which provides medical, health education, and social services at approximately 3,500 visits each year.

YMHI staff collaborate with community-based educational, job-readiness, recreational, and social service agencies to increase staff comfort talking with young men about health and to increase referrals to the YMC. YMHI activities also include training medical, social work, and other health care professionals throughout NYC on men’s sexual and reproductive health.

Currently, YMHI is conducting a qualitative study with local men who have sex with men (MSMs)—but who do not identify themselves as gay—in an effort to improve services for them.
