The Mailman School's Asthma Basics for Children Program Holds World Asthma Day Poster Competition Ceremony For the fourth consecutive year, the Mailman School's Northern Manhattan Asthma Basics for Children (ABC), led by Sally Findley, PhD, professor of clinical Population and Family Health, sponsored its World Asthma Day poster competition and ceremony for Northern Manhattan schools and day care/Head Start centers. The children were asked to design posters to express what they have learned about asthma prevention. The poster competition, which was launched on World Asthma Day, is the culminating event of the school year at each of the ABC program sites. ABC works with community health providers, community and child care organizations and schools. Over 700 teachers have been trained to identify asthma symptoms and avoid serious asthma episodes, and more than 10,000 children have been screened by the centers and schools. Through its community-based activities, the ABC initiative has been able to reduce serious asthma episodes by half or more, while one-fourth have more asthma-free days. This year there were 2,120 poster submissions from students at elementary schools and pre-schoolers at Head Start and day care programs, up from 270 submissions the first year. Prizes were awarded within age categories at the poster competition ceremony held in June.
