In June, the Mailman School’s fifth annual Public Health Scholars Fund, event was held at Columbia University’s Low Library. Nearly 100 friends, colleagues, and leaders in hospital administration, healthcare, and healthcare law joined Mailman School alumni, faculty, and staff to honor the 2007 award recipient, Alumni Executive Board President Michael H. Barnett, MS ’70, JD ’72, president and CEO of Barnett, Ehrenfeld, Edelstein & Gross, PC.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Mailman School’s Northern Manhattan Asthma Basics for Children (ABC), led by Sally Findley, PhD, professor of clinical Population and Family Health, sponsored its World Asthma Day poster competition and ceremony for Northern Manhattan schools and day care/Head Start centers.

The Advisory Council of the Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health announced that they have selected Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH ‘91, and Lynn Freedman, JD, MPH ‘90, as Ambassadors for the Paul G. Rogers Society. They are among 50 of the nation’s foremost global health experts selected for the honor.

Bhaven Sampat, PhD, assistant professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, has been selected by the National Advisory Committee of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research as one of this year’s award recipients for his contributions in improving health and health policy. The award provides funding for projects that address some of the most challenging policy issues and concerns facing America today, as well as wide-ranging concerns about the nation’s health and healthcare system.

John Gupta, MPH ’96, has been appointed chief executive officer of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, South Shore. Previously, Mr. Gupta served as vice president and chief operating officer of the Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens in Long Island City from 2000 to the present. At the 235-bed hospital, which is a wholly owned division of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, he provided strategic leadership and was responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of clinical and non-clinical departments. Among his many other responsibilities, he was also responsible for the hospital’s strategic direction and facility master plan, medical staff development and physician partnership strategies.

The University of Florida College of Medicine has named Joseph Tyndall, MD, MPH ’06, interim chairman of its Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Tyndall is also an associate professor and vice chairman of the department.

Twenty students and one student organization were recognized for outstanding dissertations and academic achievement in the field of public health at the Mailman School’s 2007 Student Awards ceremony. Department chairs and faculty members provided the audience with an overview of the awardees’ accomplishments before Andrew Davidson, PhD, executive vice dean, awarded their certificates. Amid cheers from family and friends, students were also congratulated by Allan Rosenfield, MD, dean of the School.
