Overview of the
Department
Health Policy and Management encompasses studies in
the formulation and implementation of health care policy and the planning
and management of the increasingly diverse range of institutions that
provide health care. The growth of the health services sector demands a
better understanding of the production and distribution of care and of how
to gauge its effectiveness in relation to costs. Just as policymakers
should be trained to examine the feasibility of their goals in light of
managers' capacities and constraints, so too managers should be equipped
to understand the policy projects that increasingly define the environment
in which they work. The Department's programs provide students with
analytical skills and methodological tools useful to policymakers and
managers in the public, voluntary, and private sectors. Faculty members
represent several disciplines in the health professions and in business,
the social sciences, and law.
