Global Health Track Coursework

All Global Health Track students are required to complete 45 points to fulfill the School's MPH requirements. The sequence of these courses varies by department. The Global Health Track curriculum in all participating departments is rigorous, requiring that students take at least 15 points of coursework during the first 2 semesters (and in many cases through the program's academic duration).

Global Health Core Courses

The Global Health Track offers three core courses (8 points) and seminars (1.5 - 2 points) to Global Health Track students. The introductory course, P6811 Introduction to Global Health, is open to students from the entire University. The purpose of these core courses is to ensure a wide-ranging general education of consistent and high quality to all Global Health Track students regardless of their area of study. Core courses allow students to reaffirm their common goal of improving public health globally, while contributing their unique experiences and the tools acquired in their respective areas of study. Core courses also emphasize the political, economic and social structure under which international public health practitioners from a variety of disciplines work.

P6810 Introduction to Global Health (Fall 1st Year)
This foundation course for the Global Health track provides an introduction to the major concepts and principles that govern the practice of global health, with an emphasis on resource-poor countries.

P6811 Priorities in Global Public Health (Spring 1st Year)
This course builds on P6810 Introduction to global health by demonstrating the application of major concepts and principles that govern the practice of global health in resource-poor countries. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we discuss seven current global health priorities: water, food and nutrition, infectious diseases, noncommunicable disease, mental health, reproductive health, and violence. Students learn to examine the social, economic, and political contributors to these global health problems and the development of strategies for their solution.

P8820 Advanced Topics in Global Health (Spring 2nd Year)
The third in the sequence of required courses for the Global Health Track, Advanced Topics in Global Health builds on P6810 Introduction to Global Health and P6811 Priorities in Global Health. Maintaining a multidisciplinary focus, the course presents five case studies of global health programs for in-depth study.  Course materials include ethnographies, epidemiologic studies, program reports, and policy papers. Using these materials, students learn to analyze the successes and shortcomings of global public health interventions. This course follows the overseas practicum for the Global Health track and builds on students’ field experiences.

Seminars

P8880 Professional Development Seminar in Global Health (Fall 1st Year)
This course exposes students to career options in global public health. Through intimate discussion with global health practitioners working in a variety of settings,  students will get a sense of the scope of career options and the pathways to these careers. The course will also address career development issues specific to students’ matriculation in the MPH program at the MSPH. Monthly sessions will help prepare students for the overseas practicum.

P8881 Global Health Pre-Practicum Seminar (Spring 1st Year)
This seminar will prepare students for the Global Health Track 6-month practicum and open discussion of the intersections of ethnicity, race, class and power that often permeate encounters between rich country and low income country public health workers. The goal is to prepare students for their experiences in the field.

P8885 Global Health Post-Practicum seminar (Spring 2nd Year)
This seminar is designed to aid students returning from the Global Health Track 6-month practicum to process their experiences in the field.  The course will also address career development issues specific to students nearing graduation from the MPH program at the MSPH and contemplating careers in global health. The course’s goal is for students to integrate the tasks learned in the field with the work of research, policy, and program development.

Departmental Courses

The remaining 36 points of coursework are taken within the chosen department or at the University graduate level. Below, you will find descriptions of field-level global health challenges and, in some cases, a description of the Global Health Track program for that department.
