Psychiatric Epidemiology
In addition to research on neurodevelopment, psychiatric epidemiology has a particularly strong presence in the division, centered around the Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Program. This program, which began in 1972, supports an inter-disciplinary group of 12 pre and post-doctoral fellows. Fellows study the basic methods of psychiatric epidemiology and participate in on-going research projects. The research interests of the program faculty are quite varied, covering a wide range of risk factors and a large number of psychiatric disorders. In terms of etiology, risk factors from all levels of organization are represented - from genetic and biologic factors, to psychological risks and social and economic determinants. Outcomes examined include depression, schizophrenia, panic disorder, alcoholism, drug abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and demoralization. In addition to etiologic research, there is considerable focus on factors influencing the course of psychiatric disorders including stigma and violence. Measurement and classification issues also play a central role in ongoing research projects.
