The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) funded the 2006 update of a book titled Staying Alive. Although geared to the safety and security of humanitarian workers in conflict zones, it contains numerous safety and security suggestions of general use in developing country travel and everyday life post-911. The book covers common sense safety and security suggestions, group safety and security, international humanitarian laws, and a broad range of conflict, banditry and crime situations that can arise unexpectedly for those performing international work. In addition to the more universally applicable areas of first aid, climate extremes, and unintentional injury prevention, the author also covers several special situations including international incidents and threats from chemical, biological, toxic industrial, and radiological agents. The book, authored by an experienced recognized expert in his field, is well laid out with chapter topics organized in an easy-to-use reference style.
