Although the practicum and thesis can be completed in different areas of interest, there are considerable advantages of linking the thesis to the practicum.
  • Literature reviews performed to prepare one to be more knowledgeable on the practicum site can be useful background for the introduction and discussion sections of the thesis. References collected for the practicum may prove useful for the thesis bibliography.
  • The practicum site may have data awaiting analysis. In such cases, the student may acquire and become familiar with the contents of a thesis-suitable data set during the practicum.
  • The practicum supervisor may have considerable knowledge of where the gaps in scientific knowledge are in the practicum specialty area. If so, this could be used to focus a thesis research question which might be addressed using data acquired through the practicum site or another publicly available data set.
  • Selection of a practicum mentor who has a doctoral level degree can sometimes provide continuity between the practicum and thesis if that person is judged to be a suitable second or third reader for the thesis. Second readers must be trained at the doctoral level and must be approved to serve in that capacity.
