The Practicum Times, published twice yearly, is a newsletter style publication for students and mentors of public health practica. The publication is produced under the leadership of a student and faculty editor with contributed articles from students, mentors, and others with useful information for those anticipating either a practica or mentoring experience. Among other things, the fall edition generally includes short articles written by second year students relating their experiences while completing domestic and international practica across a wide range of locations, agencies, and organizations. Acting as a conduit for passing helpful tips, pitfalls to avoid, and newly acquired wisdom from one generation of students to the next, the fall edition is timed so as to be available for first year students in advance of their beginning a practicum search. The spring issue increases the scope of its focus to include facilitating successful mentoring experiences and is timed for release prior to summer practicum placements. This experiment of publishing one document providing similar information to both mentors and students is founded on our observations that suggest a correlation between positive/negative experiences of mentors and the students they mentor. Thus, placing emphasis on both the mentor having a rewarding experience as well as the student having a positive exposure to applied public health appears to facilitate the likelihood that both will occur.
