Although the practicum can be completed at anytime during the two year program, most students find it valuable to complete all or a large portion of their practicum before the third semester when they begin work on their Master's thesis. The summer between the first and second year is the most popular time to complete a practicum. Anyone who does not anticipate approval for practicum equivalent work experience by the end of their first semester should consider doing a practicum during their summer break.

There are many factors that influence a student's final practicum selection. Although it is helpful to have specific identified interests, this can be a great time to explore areas of potential interest which require only a short term commitment. Some students use this time to learn more about areas they may be considering pursuing as a career.

There are faculty and staff advisors to discuss and guide you through the process of selecting a practicum. Consider the questions below and then complete and submit the Student Practicum Survey Form. This will act as a guide if you choose to meet with practicum faculty and staff to discuss any issues you may have related to practicum placement.

As students are balancing their areas of interest, family commitments, geographic and financial constraints, it may help to consider some of the following questions:

  • How geographically mobile am I? Do I want to do a domestic or an international practicum? Must my practicum be in NYC?
  • What do I envision myself doing after graduation?
  • Do I want to use my practicum as a possible future job placement and if so, in what job or agency do I envision myself working after graduation?
  • Do I have career goals that include further academic pursuits, such as obtaining a Ph.D. or other advanced degree?
  • Do I want to do a practicum that offers the possibility of a publication or presentation at a scientific session?
  • How strongly do I need to consider financial aspects such as whether my practicum must be paid?
  • Do I want to do my thesis as an extension of my practicum?
