Practicum opportunities at the institutes and centers of NIH are among the most wide ranging and prestigious available to graduate students in epidemiology. Finding an epidemiologically-relevant practicum at NIH generally involves more work on the part of the student than finding a similar placement at NYC DOHMH or the CDC, but there are rewarding, epidemiologically-relevant internship and practicum placements available. Summer internship programs are said to exist in at least 20 of the 27 divisions at NIH. Many are not directly epidemiologically relevant so students should be careful when exploring divisions that do not have an epidemiology section. With few exceptions, paid interns at NIH must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents although they also have a volunteer program that may provide more flexibility for non-residents. Other requirements may apply to particular internships.

Each division handles their own internship placements, but the application process may be initiated online through a centrally located process. This section of the website has information on which divisions have had epidemiology-related opportunities in the past, on effective methods to locate a suitable practicum opportunity in your area of interest, and how to apply for an internship or practicum opportunity at the National Institutes of Health.
