Many master's students in epidemiology have worked prior to returning to school. Some, but not all positions, will have provided the student with prior epidemiologically-relevant experience that can be used in fulfillment of the practicum requirement. However, it is not unusual for students to elect to complete a practicum in a public health setting different from their past work experience even though they qualify for equivalent experience.
Because there is a great deal of heterogeneity in the scope and activities of past work experiences, the acceptability of each student's experience is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. For those who elect to apply for practicum equivalent credit, a request should be made in writing by the student during the first semester of school. In such instances as the request is approved, this requirement is not being waived- rather prior equivalent experience is being accepted in fulfillment of the practicum requirement. Requests for practicum equivalent experience should be filed before the conclusion of the first semester of the Master's program. The guidelines for making such a request can be found in this section of the website.
