Practicum opportunities within the Department of Epidemiology at the Mailman School are nearly as varied as the research interests of the faculty. Depending on the professor and the project, the practicum may involve field work such as outbreak investigations, administration of surveys, and other community-related activities, or assignments made be restricted to office work such as data entry, data cleaning, and computer analyses. Many professors allow use of their data sets for the Master's thesis and provide the opportunity for coauthored publications. Grant funding may provide for a paid practicum working under an experienced epidemiologist. Although internships at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) generally have visa restrictions that frequently exclude foreign students, NIH funded projects located at Mailman rarely have this restriction. Not all faculty offer practicum placement opportunities and some are located off-site at other institutions in New York City, other cities in the U.S., and abroad.

The link below contains a listing of the Department of Epidemiology faculty, their research interests, e-mail contact information, and geographical location. Unless otherwise noted, faculty members are located in New York City. As of the fall of 2005, faculty listings include a middle initial to facilitate the student being able to review the Medline publications of faculty they are contemplating approaching for a practicum.
