CAREER PLANNING AND JOB SEARCH CALENDAR
Use this calendar as a guide to the career development and job search process. Career planning and job searching should begin sooner, rather than later in your academic career. Therefore, some of the events and deadlines referenced below may be earlier than you might expect.

- Visit the Resource Room at OCS and review the career education and job search resources, including computers, fax and copiers.
- Visit the World Bank for information on winter and summer internships. Winter internships typically have an early fall deadline date.
- The deadlines for the National Cancer Institute's paid six-month internships in the areas of health communications and science writing are typically September 15th for the January through June term and March 15th for the July through December term.

- Sign-up for Fall Career Education Workshops and On-Campus Events
- The ASPH/CDC deadlines for the Eliminating Minority Health Disparities Initiative Internships are typically in September and March. Request information from OCS or visit the website at www.asph.org.
- Students interested in consulting and/or corporate opportunities should plan to attend a resume/cover letter development workshop as early as possible in the fall to be prepared to respond to opportunities with consulting firms and in preparation for Fall Career Day in October. If you are unable to attend a workshop, view cover letter and resume templates at this site. Consulting firms typically begin the interviewing process for full-time employment in the fall and for summer internships in January.
- Familiarize yourself with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Health Research Training Program (HRTP). Pick up a brochure from OCS and/or visit the website at http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/hrtp/hrtp.shtml. The deadline for Spring internships is typically mid-October and the deadline for summer internships is typically early February.
- Consult the website (www.columbia.edu/cu/ccs) of the Columbia Morningside Campus Career Services Center for up-to-date information on employer information sessions and job fairs that you may attend. You are not eligible, however, to interview on-campus through the Center's on-campus recruiting program.
- Order business cards (September 2-8) to insure having cards for Fall Career Day.
- The Environmental Leadership Program Fellowship deadline is typically in early October. Check with OCS or visit the website at www.elpnet.org.
- The ASPH/HRSA Round II Fellowship deadline is typically in mid-October. Check with OCS or visit the website at www.asph.org.
- October graduates, schedule to meet with a career services advisor to discuss job search strategies and job offers.
- The deadlines for Global Health Council internships are typically October 1st for Winter internships, April 1st for Summer internships and June 1st for Fall internships (www.globalhealth.org).

|

- Review job postings regularly for full-time jobs for graduating students, internships for continuing students and general career exploration.
- Continue to sign up for Career Education Workshops.
- Consult Career Education Workshops and On-Campus Events for specifics on Fall employer information sessions.
- Schedule an appointment with a career services advisor to discuss your specific job search/career development issues and the Alumni Database. Utilize the knowledge you have gained from attending Resume and Cover Letter Development workshops to develop/refine your basic cover letter and resume. If you did not attend a workshop, review cover letter and resume samples for guidance. Consider using the Office's resume review service for a "quick and dirty" critique of your resume and cover letter.

- The PRC Minority Fellowship Program enhances the preparation of future public health professionals from ethnic and racial minorities by providing unique training opportunities in prevention research. - MCH Graduate Student Internship Program is designed to enhance students' skills in data analysis and to provide assistance to State and local health agencies with data-related projects to enhance their epidemiologic capacity. For details, visit www.mchirc.net/gsip.htm

- The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals of Northern Arizona University through its American Indian Air Quality Training Program offers a summer internship that provides Native American and other students with the opportunity to assist governmental facilities (primarily EPA) and Indian tribes with special projects. Students will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on research at sites throughout the United States including projects covering a wide range of topics such as: Air/Water Quality, Community Outreach/Education, Environmental Health, Information Collection/Data Analysis, Environmental Justice and Youth Environmental Education. - American Jewish World Service Public Health Fellows Program provides professional training to the staff members of NGOs working to promote community health education, women's health projects and HIV prevention programs in the developing world. - The AHRQ Summer Internship Program is intended to provide students with an opportunity to work in an environment with some of the leading researchers in the health services research community. Students interested in summer internship opportunities should follow the application procedures described on the official announcement at http://www.ahrq.gov/about/vacancy.htm. - CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship Program is a two-year training program designed to give recent graduates from schools of public health on-the-job training at state and local health departments in the field of applied epidemiology. - The Columbia University Public Policy Consortium Fellowship (for Ph.D. students in public policy) typically has a mid-March deadline. Call the SIPA contact at 212.854.2167 for additional information.
- USAID has a limited number of Summer 2004 internships available in the Bureau for Africa located in Washington, D.C. This is an excellent opportunity for outstanding students interested in pursuing careers in international development. The internships are unpaid positions. - The Washington Internship Program and Somers Aging and Long-Term Care Internship are sponsored by the National Academy of Social Insurance and typically have an early March deadline. Washington Interns are placed in a government agency, legislative committee or non-partisan private organization that addresses social insurance or health policy concerns. Each intern is assigned a substantive project, often involving policy analysis, tracking legislation and report writing.
