The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Biostatistics
The Doctor of Public Health degree in biostatistics prepares candidates to apply modern statistical methods to the solution of important public health problems as leaders of multidisciplinary research teams. It is distinguished from the PhD degree at Columbia in its emphasis on applications, as opposed to new theoretical developments (although many DrPH students include new methods and contribute to the advancement of statistical theory as part of their dissertation work). Well-qualified students are admitted to the program if they already possess a Master of Public Health degree or its equivalent, with substantial coursework in biostatistics. Students with a master’s degree in biostatistics or a related field may be admitted with the understanding that they must take all core curriculum courses in Public Health not already taken and without credit towards the doctoral degree, or pass a waiver exam. All core curriculum course requirements must be satisfied before any further course work is undertaken. There may be additional requirements regarding the core curriculum in Public Health.
The degree program is administered by the Standing Doctoral Committee of the Mailman School of Public Health, which carries out faculty policy on admission to the doctoral program and upholds the criteria for granting the degree. For additional details on the School of Public Health's regulations regarding successful completion of qualifying examinations and the dissertation for the DrPH degree, visit the Office of Student Affairs, or refer to the “Mailman School of Public Health Student Handbook”: http://mailman-handbook.com/.
The Department of Biostatistics offers a limited number of fellowships for students in its two doctoral programs. Full fellowship support consists of tuition and a stipend. To ensure full consideration, please submit your completed online application by December 15th.
