Epidemiology

Considered the cornerstone of public health, epidemiology employs conceptual theory, specific methodology, and a body of substantive knowledge. Epidemiologists study the distribution and causes of disease in human populations and also develop and test ways to prevent and control disease.

With a constant eye toward active engagement in public health, the Epidemiology Department’s major research programs focus on producing practical public health benefits. Graduates of the Department are prepared to assume leadership roles in research and population health, public health action, and program evaluation.

At the master's degree level, our students pursue the MPH or MS degree with the option to enroll in the school-wide, interdepartmental MPH track in global health. Essential to the MPH and MS educational experience is a wide range of practica available to our students locally in New York City, across the nation, and around the world. At the doctoral degree level, we confer both PhD and DrPH degrees. Doctoral students benefit from a collaborative environment that links classroom learning and mentoring with our vast array of domestic and international research projects.
