MPH Program

The MPH degree in Sociomedical Sciences (SMS) is designed to train healthcare professionals in the application of theories and methods of social and behavioral sciences to address public health issues. Students are provided with the knowledge to understand the importance of social and behavioral sciences for the health of individuals and communities and the skills to apply this knowledge in the analysis and formulation of public health programs and policies. Students in this program select one of seven tracks.

Track Offerings

Although the tracks may take disciplinary, professional, or topical approaches to public health, they are united by a focus on our signature themes. Two tracks (Social Science Research in Public Health, History and Ethics of Public Health) emphasize the methodological, theoretical, and disciplinary research tradition of the social sciences. Five tracks (Health Promotion, Aging and Public Health, Global Health, Sexuality and Health, Urbanism and the Built Environment) target specific populations or spheres of particular public health concern for analysis and intervention. These tracks emphasize program design, implementation, and evaluation.
