Doctoral Program

In addition to administering an MPH program, the Department of Sociomedical Sciences also offers the School’s largest doctoral program, including both a DrPH and a PhD. A doctoral program is key to the intellectual vitality of an academic department, school, and university. The SMS doctoral program prepares individuals who wish to combine training in the social and behavioral sciences within the field of public health. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students will be able to conduct independent and scholarly research that advances knowledge in public health.

The Department has experienced a rising number of doctoral applicants, making the admissions process extremely competitive. Over 175 doctoral applications are now received each year for approximately 8 to 10 candidate openings. A commitment has been made to admit only a small, select number of applicants for whom the Department can provide funding support. Our current financial aid package covers up to three years of support, including a stipend for nine months, health insurance, and computer fees, as well as full tuition for the period of the student’s course work. This support is based on the candidate’s acceptance of a research assistantship that enables students to conduct 20 hours per week of applied research on one of the Department’s ongoing research projects. Funding is reviewed annually and continued during the course work stage, contingent on satisfactory academic progress and availability of funding.
