The Department of Epidemiology Welcomes New Faculty Members

This September, three new faculty members joined the Department:

Gina Lovasi, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology.  Dr. Lovasi, a former Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholar, conducts research addressing cardiovascular health, obesity, physical activity and the built environment.

Thelma Mielenz, Assistant Professor Epidemiology, joins us from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Mielenz, an epidemiologist and physical therapist, investigates musculoskeletal disease in aging.

Parisa Tehranifar, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, is a former postdoc in the Department’s Cancer Epidemiology Training Program.  Her research focuses on social determinants of health disparities in cancer outcomes.  

Two more faculty members will be joining us in October:

Tiffany Gary-Webb is currently Associate Professor of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Gary-Webb investigates health disparities in diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, with a focus on social epidemiology and social determinants of disease.  She will join the Department on October 1, 2009.

Jeanine Genkinger is presently Assistant Professor in the Division of Carcinogenesis, Biomarkers and Epidemiology, in the Department of Oncology, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center.  Dr. Genkinger will conduct cancer epidemiology research addressing prostate, pancreatic and other cancers.
