The Master of Public Health (MPH) program in Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) is designed to prepare students for employment in organizations concerned with environmental and occupational exposures to chemical and physical agents. Graduates pursue careers in academia; chemical and pharmaceutical industries; federal, state, and local environmental protection agencies; health departments; hospitals; and public interest groups, among others. Because the field of environmental health sciences is so broad, students are required to select one of five specialty tracks:
Each of the five specialty tracks offers students a specific set of competencies. Students will also achieve both Department-wide (see below) as well as School-wide MPH competencies.
Incoming students represent a diverse mix of individuals. Some come directly from an undergraduate program, typically with a science based major while others join the program with one - two years or more of work experience in the public health field. A school-wide prerequisite is that all applicants have a minimum of one year of Math (Algebra, Calculus). Additional requirements for EHS students are as follows: applicants interested in the Molecular Toxicology, Molecular Epidemiology or the Global Health Tracks should have one year of Biology, one year of General Chemistry and either a course in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Cellular Microbiology. The chemistry pre-requisite is recommended but not required for Environmental Health Policy applicants. Details about the prerequisites for the Medical/Health Physics track can be found on the track’s webpage.
All MPH candidates begin their studies in the summer or fall semester. Interested candidates should contact the Admission Office for more information.
The Department’s MPH degree requirements include:
Students must complete a minimum of 45 credits for the MPH degree plus any required courses as specified in their EHS Track. After required courses are completed, electives may be taken within our Department, other Mailman School departments, or other graduate schools throughout Columbia University (Cross Registration Form (PDF).
Upon satisfactory completion of the MPH degree in EHS, graduates will be able to
